Important room-size note: the 1,862-square-foot number represents only one air change per hour. That is not the number we would use for allergy or smoke control. Levoit’s 388-square-foot figure at 4.8 air changes per hour is the more useful buying limit.
How well does the Vital 200S clean the air?
Two numbers deserve most of your attention: CADR and performance at a tolerable sound level. Levoit publishes a 250 CFM CADR. HouseFresh bought the Vital 200S and tested it in the same 728-cubic-foot room it uses for other purifiers. At top speed, the unit brought PM1 to zero in 23 minutes and produced an estimated PM1 CADR of 249 CFM.
That close agreement is reassuring. A manufacturer figure and an independent estimate will not always match exactly because the methods and particle sizes differ, but 250 and 249 CFM tell the same practical story. This is a capable midrange purifier, not a small bedroom unit wearing an inflated large-room label.
The quieter result may matter more
Few people sleep or work beside an air purifier running at maximum speed all day. HouseFresh therefore repeated its particle test at a setting below 45 dBA. At speed two, it measured 41.9 dBA and estimated 128 CFM. PM1 reached zero in 46 minutes.
That is a useful real-world result. You give up roughly half the clean-air delivery compared with top speed, but the machine remains productive at a sound level many people can tolerate. If you are a light sleeper, use Sleep Mode first and raise the speed only if the room remains comfortable.
What room size should you actually use?
For a standard eight-foot ceiling, 250 CFM is enough for about 388 square feet at 4.8 air changes per hour. HouseFresh uses a slightly stricter five-ACH target and recommends about 373 square feet. Either figure is reasonable. We would treat 300 to 375 square feet as the comfortable range, especially when the purifier will often run below full speed.

The Vital 200S uses three physical layers. A removable pre-filter catches hair and larger dust. Behind it sits a particle filter bonded to a layer of pelleted activated carbon. HouseFresh’s photographs confirm that the carbon is in pellets rather than a thin carbon-coated sheet.
The washable pre-filter is one of the best reasons to consider this model for a home with cats or dogs. It gives you a surface you can clean before hair and lint pack into the more expensive filter. The U-shaped lower inlet also gives large debris a broad entry path. This does not replace vacuuming. Most visible pet hair settles on floors and furniture before a purifier can collect it, while fine dander stays airborne longer.
Is the Vital 200S a True HEPA purifier?
The careful answer is that Levoit’s current wording is narrower than its older marketing. The official Vital 200S page says the supplied filter captures at least 99.97% of 0.3-micron airborne particles. It also says the original filter is HEPA-grade while Sleep Mode is operating. The current page does not call the filter H13.
In August 2023, BBB National Programs reported that VeSync voluntarily discontinued certain HEPA claims after a National Advertising Division challenge from Dyson. The public case summary specifically names the EverestAir, Core 300, and Core 300S, not the Vital 200S. It would therefore be inaccurate to say that the published NAD summary directly ruled on this model. It is fair to say Levoit’s present wording should be read exactly as written, without adding an H13 claim the company does not currently make.
Does that make the Vital 200S ineffective? The independent 23-minute particle result says no. Airflow and filter efficiency work together, and real room cleaning is better judged by CADR and controlled particle tests than by a single label.
What the carbon layer can and cannot do
Pelleted carbon is preferable to a lightly coated fiber sheet for common cooking smells and pet odors. Still, the Vital 200S does not contain the pounds of sorbent found in specialist gas purifiers. HouseFresh specifically advises looking at heavy-carbon machines for serious VOC or gas problems.

The Vital 200S does not offer an ionizer button or an electronic air-cleaning mode. The California Air Resources Board lists model LAP-V201S-WUS as a mechanical air cleaner. CARB defines mechanical models as devices that use physical filtration and do not generate ozone or ions.
That is stronger evidence than repeating a retailer’s phrase, but it still should not be turned into a medical promise. CARB explicitly says certification does not prove cleaning effectiveness and does not mean a device is safe for every person or condition. The fan is efficient at the lower settings. Your electricity cost depends on local rates and how often the purifier changes speed, so a fixed annual-dollar promise will age badly. For a simple estimate, multiply watts by hours used, divide by 1,000, and multiply by your electricity price per kilowatt-hour.
